Qlifc Penliulum Greek Weekend coverage on page 5 Volume K, Number 24 Elon College, Elon College, N.C. 27244 Thursday, April 14, 1983 McSheehy takes presidency; voter turnout low by Debbie SBpaani and Louida Loaka In last week’s Stu dent Government Associa tion (SGA) elections, Diane McSheeby captured the office of president, while Bob Moser and John Smith won vice president and treos- urer, respectively. According to Kyle Camp- bell, current senior class president and head of the Board of Elections, 419 stu dents voted. Campbell attri butes the poor turnout to the fact that “people may have been turned off because they felt the election involved no challenge. John Smith and Bob Moser were running unopposed.” Campbell points out that McSheehy was unopposed during the last week of campaigning, until Mark Brammer turned in his application at the deadline. Campbell added that the deadline had to be extended because McSheehy was run ning against no opposition and the spot for one of the offices was vacant. On the other hand, Bram mer plans to approach the Board of Elections because, “I feel the publicity was poor. I had several people who wanted to vote come up to me and ask where and when they could vote. To me, that should have been clear." He adds, “There wasn’t enough time given for the voting. That was unfair to both Diane and myself.” Although McSheehy and Brammer campaigned rigor ously, McSheehy appeared to have the edge in that she had a week’s start on Bram mer and her pamphlets, pos ters and qualificaiioQS were Diane McSheeby widely circulated. According to McSheehy, her main goal is to “project student involvement in all areas.” McSheehy says that students are misinformed concerning SGA activities and ask, “What has the SGA done for me?” McSheehy is quick to point out that the students need to be motivated enough to want to become involved, concerned and informed. w. But first, I’m going to send out my senators and have them poU the students as to what they want.” Top priorities on McSheehy’s list of projects include issues of visitation rights and long-term housing for Greek organizations. John Smith “I realize concerns stu dents have, there's always perennial visitations con cerns. As far as housing the Greeks, I think that’s one of the first things we need to work on.” McSheehy also wants to look into the current parking problems that many com muters face. “I want to reach students who have the time and fed ardently about cont. on p. 8 Spring Fling offers Pure Prairie League , Mike Cross concert by Loukla Louka News Editor The Student Union Board is sponsoring a Spring Fling the last weekend in April.
